Giving this Holiday Season

Habitat for Humanity is a fantastic nonprofit organization, with affiliates in every section of the United States. They were "founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. We build with people in need regardless of race or religion. We welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds."

While we often think about buying, selling, or improving our own homes, I would suggest that we take a moment and consider the needs of others. When we improve the housing of those in need, we improve our neighborhoods, schools, and counties.

Giving to Habitat for Humanity is easy, especially during this Holiday season. The best part? You don't have to write a check to show your support. Here are three easy ways that anyone can give to Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteer
You don't have to be a construction worker to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. There's a volunteer for every job and a job for every volunteer. Workers of every skill level are needed every day. When Habitat for Humanity builds a house for a family in need, they do so through volunteer labor. Giving your time is a cost-free way to give back to your community.

It's also a rewarding experience. As a volunteer, you'll spend a day working to produce a practical and sustainable impact.

Donate to the ReStore
The ReStore is a really great idea. Habitat for Humanity explains it as "a retail store, accepting donations of new and gently used home and building items from individuals and businesses in the community. Those goods are then sold to the public at a reduced cost, usually 50 – 70% off the original rate. All proceeds support Habitat home builds by the local Habitat affiliate."

Have you recently remodeled or updated your home? Do you have extra appliances, supplies, or tools? Giving them to the ReStore is easy, especially because most Habitat affiliates offer to pick these items up from your home.

Shop at the ReStore

What do you get for the person who has everything? How about some great building supplies for their remodeling project, a new light fixture for their kitchen, or a unique piece of furniture? Shopping at the ReStore is a great way to support Habitat for Humanity. Kill two birds with one stone by finally finding the perfect Christmas gifts while helping to fund Habitat builds.

Supporting Habitat for Humanity is a great way to take an active part in improving your neighborhood and city. In real estate, we often talk about the importance of location. Well, what makes a location valuable? Well kept homes filled by responsible tenants is usually a defining factor. By giving to Habitat for Humanity, you are making your city a better place.
